A secret switch in your car that could one day save your life.

1. Hidden trunk release switch

Many vehicles include a hidden trunk release switch inside the trunk itself. This feature was designed as a safety measure to prevent entrapment, especially in emergencies such as if the car becomes submerged in water. The switch is usually located on the inside of the trunk lid and can be activated with a simple push or pull.

To access this switch from inside the car, fold down the rear seats to reach into the trunk. Once inside, locate the release switch on the trunk lid. Pressing it will open the trunk, allowing you to escape if the doors are jammed or the car is filled with water. This switch works because it directly triggers the trunk latch mechanism independently of the external key or button controls.

This release should not be used during normal driving or when the trunk is loaded with cargo that could suddenly shift. Also, avoid relying on it as your primary escape method without practicing how to reach it quickly. In some older or less common car models, this switch may not be present or may work differently, so check your vehicle’s manual to be sure.
