3. Avoiding overloading the drum
Overloading your washing machine drum severely limits its ability to extract water effectively during the spin cycle. When the drum is too full, clothes cannot move freely, and water is trapped between fabric layers, leading to poorly spun laundry.
To optimize drying, load your washing machine to no more than about 75% of its capacity. This allows enough space for garments to tumble and release water efficiently. Overloading not only prolongs drying time but also puts extra strain on the machine’s motor and suspension system, potentially shortening its lifespan.
Check your machine’s manual for recommended load sizes per fabric type, and separate heavy items like towels from lighter fabrics to ensure even spinning.
4. Proper placement of clothes after spinning
Once the spin cycle is complete, how you place your clothes for drying makes a significant difference. Avoid piling damp clothes in a heap or stuffing them into confined spaces, as this traps moisture and slows evaporation.
The best practice is to spread clothes out evenly on a drying rack or clothes horse, allowing air to circulate around them. Hanging items individually and shaking them out before placing them helps reduce wrinkles and promote faster drying.
For thicker items like jeans or sweaters, turning them inside out can expose damp inner layers to air and speed drying.
5. Using radiator heat safely for drying
Radiators provide a convenient heat source for drying clothes indoors, especially in colder months. However, safety and effectiveness depend on proper placement and ventilation.
Place your drying rack at least one to two meters away from the radiator to avoid overheating clothes and to reduce the risk of fire hazards. The warm air circulating in the room will dry clothes without direct contact. Ensure the room is well ventilated to prevent excess indoor humidity, which can cause mold growth and damage walls.
If using a radiator for drying, monitor the process and avoid leaving clothes unattended for extended periods. Using a dehumidifier in the room can help maintain optimal moisture levels.
