3. Pre-treat stains
Pre-treating stains on pillows improves the chances of removing discolorations and odors during washing. Start by applying a gentle stain remover or a mixture of mild detergent and water directly to affected areas. For yellow sweat stains, a solution containing oxygen-based bleach (safe for most pillow fabrics) can be effective.
Allow the pre-treatment to sit for 15 to 30 minutes before washing. For tough stains, gently rub the solution into the fabric with a soft brush or cloth, taking care not to damage delicate fibers. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the pillow care label specifically permits it, as it can degrade some materials.
4. Machine washing guidelines
If your pillow is machine washable, follow these guidelines to ensure thorough cleaning without damaging the filling or fabric. Use a front-loading washing machine if possible, as it is gentler on pillows compared to a top loader with an agitator.
- Wash two pillows at a time to maintain balance in the machine.
- Select a gentle or delicate cycle with warm water, as hot water can harm some pillow fillings.
- Use a mild liquid detergent free from dyes and fragrances.
- Add an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent residues are removed.
After washing, gently press out excess water; do not wring or twist the pillows as this can cause clumping or distortion. Follow drying instructions carefully to restore fluffiness.
5. Hand washing methods
For pillows that cannot be machine washed, such as memory foam or latex, hand washing is the safest option. Fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the pillow and gently squeeze the soapy water through it to clean.
Avoid soaking memory foam for extended periods, as excessive water can damage the material. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap. Press out water gently without wringing. Air drying is essential for these pillows to maintain their structure.
For feather or down pillows that require delicate care, hand washing can reduce wear and tear compared to machine washing.
