3. Herpes virus inhibition
The herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) causes recurrent cold sores and genital herpes. Oregano oil’s antiviral activity, mainly attributed to carvacrol, interferes with viral replication and may inactivate the virus on contact.
For cold sore outbreaks, topical application of diluted oregano oil at the earliest symptoms can reduce the duration and severity of lesions. Oral supplementation may also support systemic antiviral defenses, but care must be taken to dilute the oil properly to avoid skin irritation.
- Always dilute oregano oil with a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil) before topical use.
- Avoid application on broken skin unless directed by a healthcare provider.
- Consult a healthcare professional for proper dosing and to avoid interactions with antiviral medications.
4. Cold and flu symptom relief
Oregano oil’s antiviral and antibacterial properties extend to respiratory infections, including influenza viruses and secondary bacterial infections that often complicate colds and flu. It helps reduce mucus buildup, which can ease breathing and relieve congestion.
