Try these hacks when your key fob stops working

6. Inspect for water or physical damage

Water intrusion or physical impacts can severely damage a key fob’s internal electronics. Even small amounts of moisture can corrode components or cause short circuits, while drops and hits may break delicate microchips or antennae.

If you suspect water damage, open the fob immediately and dry it thoroughly. Silica gel packets or uncooked rice can help absorb moisture if the fob is sealed shut. Avoid using heat sources like hair dryers, which can warp plastic parts.

For physical damage, inspect for cracked circuit boards or loose parts. Visible damage typically requires replacement of the key fob, as repairs are rarely practical or cost-effective.

7. Try the smartphone digital key option

Many newer vehicles support smartphone digital keys, which use Bluetooth or NFC technology to unlock and start the car without the physical fob. Setting this up in advance provides a valuable backup access method if your key fob fails.

To enable a digital key, download your car manufacturer’s official app and follow instructions to pair your smartphone with the vehicle. This often involves verifying your identity and proximity to the car.

Digital keys offer convenience and security but depend on your phone’s battery and software. Ensure your phone is charged and the app is updated for reliable access.

8. Test the key fob range and signal

A key fob typically operates within a range of a few meters from the vehicle. If you notice the fob only works when very close, or inconsistently, this can indicate a weakening transmitter or antenna issue.

Test the range by walking away from the car with the fob, noting the maximum distance at which it still works. Interference from other electronic devices or physical obstructions can reduce effective range.

If the range is significantly below normal, and battery replacement hasn’t helped, the fob’s internal radio components may be failing, necessitating repair or replacement.
