1. Identify removable drawer
The first step to effectively cleaning your washing machine’s detergent drawer is to locate and remove it. Most modern machines feature a detergent drawer that can be pulled out completely, often with a release mechanism or button to press. This design allows for easier access behind and inside the drawer where detergent residue, fabric softener, and mold can accumulate unnoticed.
To find the removable drawer, gently pull on the detergent compartment at the front of your washing machine. If it stops partway, look for a small tab or button—usually located near the back of the drawer—that you can press or lift to fully release the drawer. Once disengaged, it should slide out completely without force.
Removing the drawer exposes hidden build-up that can clog the dispensing channels and cause unpleasant odors or inefficient washing. If your washing machine model does not have a removable drawer, consult the user manual for specific cleaning instructions to avoid damage.
2. Soak in warm soapy water
After removing the detergent drawer, the next step is to soak it in warm, soapy water. This process loosens hardened detergent deposits, fabric softener residues, and any trapped dirt that accumulate over time. Use a basin or sink filled with water at a comfortable warm temperature and add a mild dishwashing liquid.
Submerge the drawer completely and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes. This soaking softens stubborn residues, making them easier to remove in the next cleaning steps. For heavily soiled drawers, soaking for up to an hour may be necessary.
Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners during soaking as they can damage the plastic components. After soaking, rinse the drawer thoroughly with clean water before proceeding to deeper cleaning methods.
