3. Use boiling water and detergent
To effectively dismantle persistent detergent and fabric softener build-up, prepare a solution of boiling water combined with a strong detergent or washing-up liquid. Boiling water helps dissolve hardened residues that warm water alone cannot remove.
Pour boiling water carefully into a container and add a few teaspoons of concentrated detergent or dish soap. Stir to mix thoroughly. Then, immerse the detergent drawer into this hot solution. The heat and detergent work together to break down grease, limescale, and mold deposits.
Allow the drawer to soak in this hot solution for about 10 to 15 minutes. Be cautious when handling boiling water to avoid burns. This step is particularly beneficial if you notice hardened lumps or discoloration inside the drawer compartments.
4. Scrub with toothbrush
Once the soaking steps have softened the grime, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub the drawer thoroughly. The toothbrush’s small head allows you to reach tight corners, crevices, and dispensing holes where residue often hides.
Focus on all compartments of the drawer, including the fabric softener and bleach sections, if present. Scrubbing removes mold, detergent crust, and any biofilm that can cause odors and reduce washing efficiency.
For stubborn spots, dip the toothbrush in the hot soapy solution or apply a paste of baking soda and water to aid in scrubbing. Avoid wire or stiff brushes that could scratch or damage the drawer’s plastic surfaces.
5. Clean detergent compartments
Besides cleaning the drawer itself, it is critical to clean the compartments inside the washing machine where the drawer fits. Residue can build up inside these compartments, clogging dispensing channels and fostering mold growth.
Use a damp cloth or small brush to wipe inside the detergent slots carefully. A cotton swab or pipe cleaner can help reach narrow channels and corners. If the compartments are removable, take them out following manufacturer instructions to clean thoroughly.
Cleaning these compartments improves detergent flow and prevents residues from redepositing on your laundry. Always ensure the compartments are dry before reinserting the drawer to avoid mold development.
